The Follow-Up Question

Nov 15, 2021

My guest this week is Tony Chatman, the author of the book The Force Multiplier: How to lead teams where everyone wins.

A force multiplier is a tool used to exponentially increase output. Think of a wheelbarrow, or a pulley.

Or in the case of a leader, someone who positively impacts the performance of those in their charge beyond the bounds of what they individually contribute — the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Tony and I discuss his journey to leadership and why he’s so passionate about building up leaders who recognize that their role is not about being the best performer on a team so they get to now lead that team.

And before you skip over this episode because you don’t hold a vice president or owner or CEO, Tony is intentional about this: the majority of leaders are supervisors, team leaders, or managers. Or perhaps parents, community leaders, or volunteers. It’s not about the title, it’s about what you do with the role.
